This platform exists because of BuddyBoss. Its modules are the right modules and its interface is a good one — what became unbearable was the stack underneath it. So this page is written by somebody who ran the other thing, and it says what BuddyBoss is better at as plainly as it says the rest.
What BuddyBoss is
A theme and a set of plugins that turn a WordPress site into a community. You provide the WordPress, the hosting, the certificates, the backups and the updates. In return you get a decade of maturity, an enormous plugin ecosystem, and the ability to bolt on almost anything — courses, commerce, memberships — because it is WordPress and WordPress can do those things.
What this is
A hosted platform where a community is a database row rather than an installation. There is nothing to host, nothing to patch, and starting a second community takes the time it takes to type a name. In return you get a smaller product with no plugin ecosystem, because there is no plugin system to have one.
BuddyBoss
Success.Digital
What it is
A WordPress theme and a plugin set, running on BuddyPress and bbPress
A hosted platform. There is no WordPress underneath
Where it runs
Hosting you buy, secure, patch and keep alive
Ours
What you update
WordPress core, BuddyPress, bbPress, the theme, the Pro plugin, and every other plugin you added — each on its own schedule
Nothing. There is no install to maintain
A second community
A second WordPress install, and a licence for that site
A row. It exists the moment you name it
Your own domain
Yours already, because the install is yours
Included, per community
Native mobile apps
Sold as a separate product, published to the stores for you
Not built. A responsive site is what there is
Plugin ecosystem
Very large. Almost anything WordPress can do
None, deliberately
Courses
A plugin — LearnDash, LifterLMS or similar, bought and maintained separately
Built in. Modules, lessons, drip, quizzes, prerequisites and certificates
Taking payment
WooCommerce or a membership plugin, yours to wire up
Not built. The database shape is in and it moves no money
Who fixes a slow page
You, or somebody you pay
Us, and you will not hear about it
WHERE BUDDYBOSS WINS
Three things it does that we do not.
A comparison that finds nothing good in the other product is an advertisement wearing a table. These are real and they may decide it for you.
Native apps in the stores. BuddyBoss sells iOS and Android apps and publishes them for you. We have a responsive site and no app at all.
Commerce, and everything else WordPress does. Courses exist on both sides now. But if your community needs to sell memberships or run a shop next quarter, that is a plugin there and unbuilt here.
Years of it. BuddyBoss has been in production far longer, with a support forum, a partner network and a body of documented answers. We are new, and a changelog is not the same thing as a decade.
WHERE THE DIFFERENCE IS STRUCTURAL
What changes when a community is a row.
These are not features either product could add to catch up. They follow from the shape of the thing.
The second one is free of effort. Seven communities on one deployment, each with its own address, brand and members. On the other model that is seven installs to keep alive.
There is no update to miss. Most WordPress community sites that break were not attacked. They were left behind.
Rules that live in the database. A host cannot read direct messages, and isolation between communities is enforced below the application rather than by it. A plugin cannot switch that off, because there are no plugins.
Nothing is irreversible. Closing a community deletes nothing, and a released address is never handed to anybody else.
What this page does not say
It does not compare prices. Ours are not settled, and comparing an undecided number to somebody else's real one would be worse than saying nothing. BuddyBoss publishes theirs.
It does not claim to be faster. That depends on your hosting, your plugins and your traffic, and we have not measured yours.
It does not tell you to move. A community that works on BuddyBoss and has somebody looking after it is a community that works.
